Who is SCUFD?

‘SCUFD.’ is the pseudonym of artist Max Bicknell. The name speaks to Max’s focus on human imperfection. His work is often informed by mental health and human interaction.

Educated in illustration and design across Central Saint Martins College, Arts University Bournemouth, and York St John University, Max has a diverse set of skills within the arts.

Max’s main interests currently lie in branding, advertising, and editorial illustration - but as a recent graduate, he is eager to dip his toes into many fields. If you have an idea in a different area, don’t hesitate to reach out!

Outside of work, Max enjoys gaming, running, and spending time with friends, family and his dogs. He aims to travel in the coming years and is trying to learn Spanish!

The story so far

You’ve found me right at the beginning of my journey - like watching the Wright brothers crash their first attempt at a plane, or discovering Charles Dickens’ English homework!

The name ‘SCUFD.’ comes from me and my friend Ed’s attempted clothing brand in 2023. We printed around 30 t-shirts in my parents’ garage and sold… 0! Yeah, we never got around to the actual selling part, but for some reason, the name stuck with me.

I've always wanted to be a ‘multi-disciplinary’ artist who has their own brand but also takes on cool editorial commissions, makes great illustrated ads, eye-catching packaging design, amazing album art, bewilderingly bubbly branding, proper dazzling poster design... anything and everything. The problem is: I’ve always been too scared to put myself out there. Now, having graduated from University, I have officially run out of excuses and am trying my best to kickstart my career as an illustrator and designer.
